DA Score Explained: A Practical Guide to Website Authority

FuRyBy FuRyOctober 10, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

When comparing websites for a marketing project, a single number can look like an easy shortcut. The DA score is one such number: it offers a quick way to compare the relative authority of domains, but it does not tell the whole story. Understanding what it measures—and what it leaves out—helps students, site owners and marketers make better decisions about search visibility and link building.

What does a DA score measure?

Domain Authority (DA) is a metric created by Moz to estimate how likely a website is to rank in search results compared with other sites. It is scored on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 100. In broad terms, a higher score indicates stronger link-based signals, but moving upward becomes harder as a domain’s score increases.

DA is not a Google ranking score, and Google does not use Moz’s number to decide where a page appears. Instead, Moz calculates it using its own data and model, including information about a site’s backlink profile. Treat it as a comparative research metric, not a direct measure of search performance or a promise that a page will rank.

For a fuller explanation of what the DA score measures and how it compares with other authority metrics, it helps to look at the methodology behind each tool rather than assuming their numbers mean the same thing.

Why the score can change

A DA score may rise or fall even when a site owner has not made a noticeable change. Moz periodically updates its index and calculation model, while the wider web is constantly gaining and losing pages and links. A domain’s score is also relative: if the sites in the comparison landscape change, the position of a particular domain can shift.

New links can contribute to a stronger profile, but quantity alone is not a reliable guide. Links from relevant, reputable pages are generally more useful to evaluate than a large batch of unrelated or low-quality links. A score can also lag behind recent activity because tools need time to discover and process links.

DA, DR and Authority Score are not interchangeable

Several SEO platforms provide authority-style metrics. Moz DA, Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR), and Semrush Authority Score all aim to summarize aspects of a domain’s strength, but each uses its own data sources and calculations. Their results can differ substantially for the same website. That difference does not automatically mean one tool is broken; it often reflects different indexes, models and signals.

When reviewing a prospect, compare like with like. Use the same platform for an initial shortlist, then inspect the site itself. A DA of 40 in one tool should not be treated as equivalent to a DR of 40 or as a universal quality threshold. Consistency in your own research is more useful than trying to translate every number across platforms.

How to use DA when assessing a website

DA can help narrow a large list of possible websites, particularly when researching guest posting or link-building opportunities. It is most useful as one part of a broader assessment. Before deciding that a site is suitable, ask:

  • Is the topic relevant? A link from a site that serves the same audience or discusses a related subject may make more sense than one from a higher-scoring but unrelated domain.

  • Does the site attract real visitors? Review available organic traffic estimates and check whether the pages receiving visits are relevant and current.

  • Are its links credible? Look for a natural backlink profile and editorial content, rather than obvious patterns of paid or manipulative links.

  • Would a reader find the page useful? The context and placement of a link matter. A link should help people explore a relevant resource, not exist only to influence a metric.

Traffic estimates are also imperfect, so use them as clues rather than exact figures. Reading a few pages and checking whether the site publishes consistently can reveal more than a score alone. For outreach, relevance and editorial standards should remain central even when a prospect has an attractive DA.

Separate domain authority from profile visibility

Not every kind of online visibility is measured by domain authority. For example, freelancers may want their profiles to appear when buyers search for talent in a particular place. On Osdire, a freelance marketplace spanning categories such as design, writing, technology and marketing, adding a city and country can help make a profile relevant to location-based searches. These Osdire profile tips address profile discovery, not a website’s DA or search ranking.

This distinction is useful: a metric should match the question you are asking. DA can support comparisons between websites for SEO research. A freelancer’s profile details, service category and location address a different discovery problem. Neither number nor profile field guarantees visibility, but accurate information gives people and search systems clearer context.

Use the score as a starting point

A DA score is most valuable when it prompts better questions, not when it replaces judgment. Check the site’s subject matter, audience, content and backlinks, and compare authority metrics only within their own tools. By combining the number with practical evidence, you can assess potential partners more carefully and avoid mistaking a convenient indicator for a complete verdict.
